Proudest Monkey Editorial Reviews Amazon.com essential recording It's tempting to label the Dave Matthews Band as torchbearers of the Grateful Dead's moderate rock fusion and send them off on the next summer tour featuring either Blues Traveler or the Spin Doctors. But there is more at work here, particularly on the band's second major-label release. Crash pairs soothing sounds (flute, acoustic guitar, six-string bass) with a dark emotional undercurrent. The South African (by way of Virginia) frontman reveals a rare intensity on the title track and the free-form "41," while the group shows that it's not afraid to let loose on songs such as the stirring "Too Much." Look no further , September 3, 2000 Reviewer: A music fan from San Francisco, CA USA I have a fairly broad taste in music. I have respect for classical, jazz, swing, and alternative, rock. I have no interest in the starving-skinny Christina Aguliara or britney Spears or the heavy rap which bashes women. I think Dave Matthews Band is a wonderful compromise. The lyrics are so well written. Dave may not have the most beautiful and charming voice you have ever heard, but what he says is amazing. Such wisdom. Carter Beaufort is an awesome drummer. This band is fairly accoustic, but the violin parts are amazing and Leroi Moore's baritone saxophone is amazing. There are no bad songs on this CD. "Let you down," is the most low key. "Crash into me" is the most popular, "The Proudest Monkey," is fairly long, but the band created sounds of the city with a great metaphor enclosed. "Lie in our graves," gives you something to think about, and "Two step," has great plucking and a great beat. "So Much To Say," has a great lyric, but Dave has so much to say but repeats, but not in a negative way. "#41" has great parts. "Too Much" is just an awesome song. "I eat to much, I drink Too Much, I want too much..." it's awesome. "Cry Freedom" is all too real. Amazing vocals. This is a wondeful CD. Amazing. Was this review helpful to you? 2 of 2 people found the following review helpful: a fabulous disc that never leaves my cd changer , May 20, 1999 Reviewer: A music fan from salt lake city, utah i admit, i was turned onto this band several years ago by an old boyfriend teaching himself to play "crash into me" on his guitar and me asking "WHAT are you trying to play?" the relationship is long since over, but my fixation with dave matthews band is an ongoing part of my life. they are, without a doubt, my favorite band, and i consider this to be their best cd. "under the table and dreaming" is also incredible, and so are their live albums and their newest studio recording, but this cd tops them all. it has a song for every feeling or activity in the book... "too much" is perfect for beer drinking and dancing at a party, "two step" is perfect to dance around your room naked to, "crash" is perfect to get some action to, "lie in our graves" is perfect for driving to go snowboarding on a beautiful, blue-sky powder day (and the jam in the middle of that song is so melodic and happy... i love it). "say goodbye" and "two step" are the two best tracks, but there are many gems on this album. i've seen this band 4 times in concert and i cannot say that there is anyone else i'd rather see more. And I LOVE Under The Table... but this album just shines! So Much To Say to Proudest Monkey, I can listen to all the tracks (baring Lover Lay Down) and I never get sick of it. this album undoubtly contains some of Dave Matthews Band's greatest works, #41 for example and also the hit song Crash Into Me. Got To Hear The Classic DMB Sound , February 1, 2005 Reviewer: A music fan from Cleveland, Ohio Nowadays, The Dave Matthews Band seems to have lost their creative, innovative, original sound somewhat. This makes listening to Crash that much more enjoyable for me. I like to hear the more original sound that this album has as compared to the somewhat stale pop-like sounds off of the last two albums. From the mellow sounds of songs like "Crash" to the great rhythm of "#41", this album shows the true power of the Dave Matthews Band sound. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition .
