Editorial Reviews Amazon.com They may seem like the latest in an endless line of overnight sensations, but San Francisco foursome Stroke 9 have been playing together for over 10 years. They formed the group as a high-school senior project, and jammin' 'n' groovin' since their teens has given Stroke 9 the kind of musical chemistry many outfits only dream of. Theirs is a story similar to that of teen-sensation-turned-multiplatinum rock band Live , and appropriately, Stroke 9 worked with Live producer (and ex- Talking Heads keyboardist) Jerry Harrison on their debut album, Nasty Little Thoughts . An upbeat collection of strummy rockers and jangly ballads, the album combines the earnestness of a band like R.E.M. with the hook-laden songcraft of acts like the Connells and the Counting Crows . Luke Esterkyn's vocals are consistently emotional without sacrificing melody, and guitarist John McDermott coaxes a rainbow of textures and tones from his instrument without straying from the simple core rhythms of the songs. The played great sets. I've had the CD since the first day it was released back in September of 1999. It's a great album. Songs like "Letters," "City Life," "Little Black Backpack," "Washin + Wonderin," and "Not Nothin'" are upbeat tunes that make you sing along with Luke. THe obnoxious guitar sounds and riffs are amazing. The mellow "Make it Last" features a guitar part that has one chord slide down half a step, making it extra mellow because it gets flat. Stroke 9 is definatly a live band. "One Time" is great live. Buy this album, I spent 4 months listening to it in heavy rotation. I was not disappointed in the CD. I agree with everything written above in the Amazon.com editorial review - take a look at that to get a good idea of the music on this disc - I think it is an excellent description. Of course I have my favorite tracks - in addition to "Little Black Backpack," I also thoroughly enjoy "Not Nothin," "Letters," "City Life," "Tail of the Sun," and "Washin + Wonderin." And I have to confess there is one track I really do not like (but it's not enough to detract from the 5-star rating): "Angels" has a repetitious "whoa whoa whoa" that is so devoid of creativity that I simply can't endure the song. With that exception, I suggest that this disc demonstrates that Stroke 9 is a band with great potential. My guess is they will be gaining popularity and producing bigger hits in the future. Cool Album , November 4, 2002 Reviewer: Martin Lemos (see more about me) from Burlingame, CA I first heard of STROKE 9 after seeing their video on the Jay and Silent Bob DVD, and I like the song and video and bought their latest CD RIP THIS OFF, after seeing them do an in-store performence at Tower Records in San Francisco. My girlfriend really likes this band and she was the one who got me into listening to them. The songs have some cool melodies and this album NASTY LITTLE THOUGTHS is real easy to listen to. I like their music and find their songs catchy and always something I can listen to anytime. The songs that I like off this album are: LETTERS, CITY LIFE, LITTLE BLACK BACKPACK, WASHIN + WONDERIN', ARE YOU IN THIS?, NOT NOTHIN', DOWN, ANGELS, and TEAR ME IN TWO. They dont sound as polished here as they do on their followup, but that doesnt take away from their songs and the quality of this disc.
